Slow Down and Help!
What a magical week we have had! Sometimes I get so wound up in my silly little world that I forget just how lucky I am. My wife, myself our 18 year old daughter Morgan and 13 year old son Thomas just finished a vacation to Disney world in Orlando, Florida. This was one of our more fantastic trips as we took the time to do some of the extras that we would normally miss out on.
The night before we left I had an aha moment that really showed me that I need to slow down and observe what is going on around me. We stopped at a gift shop to buy some silly little gifts for folks that we know back home. When we got out of the car there was a guy (I wish I would have taken a picture of him) sitting on a bench outside the store. He was a large imposing figure, very scary looking even to me. He didn’t say a word to us as we went in but just looked at us. My daughter looked at me when we got inside and said wow that was creepy and I said yep he was pretty scary. When we were on the way out the door after our shopping excursion the guy was still out there and he called out to me. I stopped and he said “I’m not going to hurt you, I know I’m big and scary looking. I have pituitary cancer and it has caused me to look like this. I don’t drink or do drugs, and I’m very hungry. Could you buy me something to eat?” As a normal American tourist I said I don’t have any money on me (which was the truth). He said “McDonalds across the street takes a card.” I said I couldn’t help him and he looked at the bag and said “is that stuff more important than feeding someone.” The only retort that I had was this is for family!
I got in the car and the family was waiting and asked what was said. I told them and they were surprised. We pulled out and something kept tugging at me, have I become that calloused? The man just asked for food, how much strength and courage did it take to humble himself and ask for no money just a meal. God really started tugging at my heart and he turned my car around to go to McDonalds to get a meal. As I was sitting in the drive thru my family asked why I was doing this and what we would do if the guy was gone when we got back. I simply stated then I’ll have wasted the money that we are spending to get this, but he’ll be there I said I know he will.
We pulled back into the gift shops parking lot and there he sat, just as imposing as he was before, but more vulnerable looking for some reason. Maybe it was all the people that sidestepped him as they were going into the store. I got out of the car with a bag of McDonalds food and a coke and walked towards him. He looked up and saw me as I got up to him and I handed him the bag. I said here you go bub. When he reached out and took the bag he started to cry and said “thank you buddy” through his tears! I said God Bless you and he said the same back to me. It was a simple transaction, but I think God was letting me know that this human being and his creature needed help and I almost missed the signs because I was too wrapped up in my own little world. There are a million excuses not to reach out and give someone a hand. We need to slow down and find the few reasons to do it! This was an invaluable lesson to me and showed me that sometimes we need reminders just to do the right things!
Today’s post has no diet help, no exercise help, just a small reminder from me to you that we are put on this earth for a reason, we are here to help each other when the need is there! Love your fellow man and be the example that shines out, the beacon of light in a sea of darkness when you are needed! Until next time I love you all and will talk to you soon!
